ɧƵ Family and Gizmo Wearables

Introduction

Please visit with your child our ɧƵ Family Privacy Policy for Kids or, for Gizmo users, our Gizmo Privacy Policy for Kids, to help them understand how ɧƵ Family or Gizmo treats information collected from and about them. If you are managing your Gizmo wearable through GizmoHub, please review the GizmoHub and Gizmo Wearables Privacy Policy.

ɧƵ Family allows family members to locate each other’s devices and includes parental control tools for parents (Guardians) and other people Guardians allow (Members) to manage and monitor the devices of children (Dependents), including smartphones, tablets, and wearables like Gizmo watches. ɧƵ Family also includes Roadside Assistance, Safe Walk (a feature that allows users to easily send their real time device location to their emergency contacts), 24/7 Assist (a professional monitoring service), Family Line (a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone line that can be shared by up to five family members), and a pet tracking feature.

ɧƵ Family’s privacy practices are covered by ɧƵ’s Privacy Policy as well as the practices described here. In the event of a conflict between the two policies, the practices described in this policy govern when using ɧƵ Family services.

Information we collect and how it is used.

Information we collect from Guardians and Members. When you install the ɧƵ Family app on your smartphone, if you do not already have a ɧƵ account you will be asked for your email address and password to create an account to authenticate you. You will also be asked to verify your mobile phone number and you can optionally provide a display name and photo. ɧƵ Family collects other information from your device(s), including device identifiers, IP address, device type, app version, and application and feature usage.

When Guardians designate a line as a ɧƵ Family Dependent, Guardians provide information about the Dependent, including the Dependent’s display name and optional photo, phone number and other device information, date of birth, and trusted and emergency contacts. For Guardians and Members connected to a Dependent using a Gizmo, we collect their relationship to the Dependent to show on the Gizmo’s contact list. For Dependents using compatible Gizmo watches, ɧƵ Family provides an option to enter medical information to display on the watch when someone presses the SOS button. ɧƵ Family also collects information about the features and settings that Guardians apply to the Dependent’s device(s), including time and usage restrictions and content filters or, for Gizmo watches, whether media backup, video calling, or auto answer are enabled.

Additional information we collect from Guardians and Members depends on the ɧƵ Family plan, the devices used, the features enabled and the permissions granted.

Location Sharing. If you allow it, we collect location from your mobile device and, if available, estimated location from the wireless network as well as motion activity information (for example, if you’re walking, running, biking, or in a vehicle). With permission, we also collect precise location from your paired smartwatch.

Call and Text Activity Monitoring. With your permission, we collect your device’s contact list to enhance the call and text activity information provided about Dependents in the ɧƵ Family app.

Gizmo Messaging: ɧƵ Family collects information about the messages you send to and receive from Gizmo watches, including text, audio, and video messages.

Driving Insights.ɧƵ Family collects device motion activity, location, and device usage data to calculate driving insights and behaviors, such as trip route and distance, top speed, hard braking, rapid acceleration, harsh cornering, potential crash events, and device usage while in a moving vehicle. We use this information to calculate individual trip driving scores and an overall driving score. You can turn off Driving Insights in My Profile. Guardians can also designate their Dependent as a passenger.

Safe Walk. If you choose to provide it, ɧƵ Family collects emergency contact information and requests that Guardians provide an emergency contact(s) for their Dependents using Safe Walk compatible devices. Emergency contacts receive a text message with your real time device location if you initiate a Safe Walk session or an SOS alert during a Safe Walk session, along with the start and end time of the Safe Walk session.

Roadside Assistance. Guardians and Members on the same ɧƵ Wireless account can use Roadside Assistance, and Guardians can enable it for Dependents. When Roadside Assistance is requested, ɧƵ Family shares name, phone number, car details, the requested service, and the address provided for service with our Roadside Assistance provider, Signature Motor Club.

24/7 Assist. Guardians and Members on the same ɧƵ Wireless account can enable 24/7 Assist, a professional monitoring service provided by Viiz Communications (“Viiz”). 24/7 Assist can be used from your mobile device or paired smartwatch. When enabled, ɧƵ Family shares with Viiz your name, home address, and emergency contact(s). If used with a paired smartwatch, 24/7 Assist also includes fall detection. When you have an emergency and use 24/7 Assist, ɧƵ Family shares your device’s location and, if applicable, information about your fall with Viiz agents who will use this information to assist you. Viiz agents may share this information with your emergency contact(s) or emergency services, and a report of the event will be available to you and your emergency contacts. Viiz is an independent company and applies when it provides assistance to you.

Family Line. If activated by the Guardian, ɧƵ Family assigns a VoIP phone line and collects and maintains records of all calls made and received using Family Line, voicemails left on the Family Line, each family member’s address for E-911 purposes and their phone contacts.

Pet Tracking. The Fi Mini smart collar is offered by Fi and, when paired with a Family account, allows families to view the Fi Mini’s location and pet activity in the ɧƵ Family app. When the Guardian pairs the smart collar, ɧƵ Family collects and shares with Fi the pet’s display name, photo, type of pet, gender, date of birth, weight, breed, and step goal. To facilitate pairing the collar and tracking the Fi Mini’s location, ɧƵ Family and Fi also collect the collar ID and home Wi-Fi router information, such as name, location, and SSID. Fi then makes available in the ɧƵ Family app the Fi Mini’s location and pet activity information, such as the number of steps taken. When used in Lost Pet Mode, we share a publicly-shareable URL with your Fi Mini’s location with all Guardiansand your pet’s emergency contacts to help with locating your lost pet. This URL includes a proxy email address that allows others to message Guardians if they have information on the lost pet. We collect all messages sent and received through Lost Pet Mode. Fi is an independent company and its applies to its collection and use of data about your pet.

Information we collect from devices designated as Dependents (including children under 13). For Dependent devices connected to the ɧƵ network, ɧƵ Family collects mobile device information, including phone number and the device’s make and model. For Gizmo watches and devices with the ɧƵ Family Companion app installed, ɧƵ Family collects additional information from the device, including other device identifiers, IP address, device type, app version, application and feature usage, and wireless network usage.

Additional information we collect depends on the ɧƵ Family plan, the devices used, the features enabled and the permissions granted.

Location Sharing. ɧƵ Family collects Dependent device location and shares it with Guardians and others the Guardian allows. The location information includes precise location from Gizmo watches and other devices with the ɧƵ Family Companion app installed as well as for compatible devices on the ɧƵ network. Network location is collected and shared even when the ɧƵ Family Companion app is not installed. Approximate geolocation identifying an area of approximately ⅔ of a mile radius of the Dependent may also be used by our partner Accuweather to provide weather updates if requested by a Gizmo watch that supports weather updates.

Network location

ɧƵ Family collects estimated location from the wireless network from Gizmo watches and smartphones and tablets connected to the ɧƵ wireless network.

Activity Information:

  • When the ɧƵ Family Companion app is installed on a Dependent’s smartphone or tablet, ɧƵ Family uses the Dependent’s location and motion activity information to display their real time activity (for example, if they’re walking, running, biking, or in a vehicle).
  • If the Dependent uses a Gizmo watch that supports step tracking, ɧƵ Family will collect the Dependent’s steps taken and display it in the ɧƵ Family app. Some Gizmo watches allow Dependents to track their own activity, such as how much they ran or biked. This activity monitoring information is stored on the watch only.

Call and Messaging Information:

  • For Dependent smartphones and tablets connected to the ɧƵ wireless network, ɧƵ Family collects , even if the Companion app is not installed. With permission, we also collect the device contact list.
cellular call and messaging activity

The call and messaging activity available through ɧƵ Family includes the date, time and duration of calls and messages made using ɧƵ Wireless calling and messaging services. It does not include calls or messaging done via third-party services such as Apple iMessage, Apple FaceTime, Google Voice, or Whatsapp, or via social media services such as Facebook Messenger or Instagram Direct Messages.

  • For Dependent Gizmo watches, ɧƵ Family collects, depending on the type of Gizmo watch used, audio and video calling information and text messages, including photo and video messages, exchanged between your child and you and between your child and others you allow.

Web and App Activity Monitoring and Content Blocking: We request permission to install the ɧƵ Family Virtual Private Network (VPN) through which ɧƵ Family collects information about the Dependent’s website and mobile app usage.

Driving Insights. When Driving Insights is enabled, ɧƵ Family collects motion and location information to calculate driving insights and behaviors, such as trip route and distance, top speed, hard braking, rapid acceleration, harsh cornering, and potential crash events, and ɧƵ Family uses this information to calculate individual trip driving scores. If the Dependent is not designated as a passenger by the Guardian, we also collect device usage while in a moving vehicle, and use the driving data and device usage data to calculate an overall driving score.

Safe Walk. When a Dependent initiates a Safe Walk session or an SOS alert during a Safe Walk session on a compatible device, their emergency contacts receive a text message with the Dependent’s real time device location, along with the start and end time of the Safe Walk session.

Roadside Assistance. When a Dependent requests service from a device with Roadside Assistance enabled, ɧƵ Family collects name, phone number, car details, the requested service, and the service address and shares that information with our Roadside Assistance provider, Signature Motor Club.

Gizmo Photos and Videos: If a Dependent uses a Gizmo watch that supports taking photos and videos and media backup is enabled, ɧƵ Family collects and stores photos and videos taken on the Gizmo device and makes them available to all Guardians in ɧƵ Family.

Gizmo Ask & Learn: If your child uses a Gizmo watch that supports Gizmo Ask & Learn (a feature that uses generative AI to answer your child’s questions about math, science and history) and you have turned it on, your child’s voice request is transcribed in real time. The text transcription is used to provide the Gizmo Ask & Learn feature and not for any other purpose, including improving any AI model.

Family Line.If activated by the Guardian, ɧƵ Family assigns a VoIP phone line and collects and maintains records of all calls made and received using Family Line, voicemails left on the Family Line, the Dependent’s address for E-911 purposes and their phone contacts.

E-911. For mobile devices connected to the ɧƵ wireless network, we collect an E-911 address for emergency response.

How we use information collected. ɧƵ Family uses the information we collect to deliver, maintain and support ɧƵ Family services, including for analytics. We also use mobile device information collected from Guardian and Member devices, including device identifiers, to measure the effectiveness of advertisements for ɧƵ Family services.

ɧƵ Family does not collect more information from Dependents’ devices or retain it for longer than is reasonably necessary to provide ɧƵ Family services. ɧƵ Family does not enable users of Dependent devices to make their personal information publicly available.

We retain account information as long as your . We retain location, Gizmo Ask & Learn requests and responses, and other activity data for up to 60 days, including up to 60 days from when you close your account. Our policies require that we retain records containing personal information for as long as they are needed for legal, tax, audit, investigative, and security purposes and then securely delete or destroy them.

ɧƵ Family account is active in the ɧƵ Family app

Your account is active until the Primary Guardian cancels the subscription. Removing the ɧƵ Family app from your mobile device does not cancel your subscription. The Primary Guardian can cancel the ɧƵ Family subscription and delete your ɧƵ Family account. If you are the Primary Guardian for a Gizmo watch, you can delete your Gizmo user’s profile to delete your ɧƵ Family account. Other Guardians and Members can delete their ɧƵ Family profile directly in the app.

Location information we collect from devices and other information we collect concerning Dependents may be considered sensitive personal information under some state laws.

Information we disclose about Dependents.

We disclose Dependents' personal information to others on your ɧƵ Family account and to who work on our behalf. These service providers use personal information disclosed to them only to provide ɧƵ Family services, including for analytics, and are required to delete the information when it is no longer needed to provide the service. We do not sell information we collect from Dependents as part of this service or information from or about Dependents’ devices or share it for any other purpose, including targeted advertising.

Service Providers

ɧƵ Family shares information with Mapbox for mapping and location services. We also share device identifiers with Google Analytics for app analytics services so that ɧƵ Family can optimize app performance and with PubNub to deliver alerts that Guardians set about their Dependents’ location or activity. When the ɧƵ Family VPN is enabled, we share the Dependent’s online activity with Cloudflare for content filtering and web and app activity monitoring. When Driving Insights is enabled on compatible devices, we share location, motion data, and information about phone usage while driving with Cambridge Mobile Telematics for driving scores and the driving analytics that are visible in the ɧƵ Family app. If the Guardian has enabled Roadside Assistance and a Dependent requests service, we share information needed to respond to the request with Signature Motor Club, including the Dependent’s name, phone number, type of service requested, car details, and service address.

For Gizmo users, we share information collected from and about your Dependent with our development partner, SmartCom, as needed for troubleshooting and with Mapbox for mapping and location services. We also collect and store the Dependent’s information with Amazon Web Services, who provides certain app functionality for Gizmo services, including for the Gizmo Ask & Learn feature.

Choices and controls.

For Guardians and Members. Depending on the features enabled, Guardians and Members provide consent for the collection of certain information from their devices, including , motion activity data, and device contact lists. You can update your GPS location permission in your device settings, but to control both your GPS and network location sharing you must use your ɧƵ Family app settings. You can also update your motion activity data and device contacts permissions in your device settings and enable and disable Driving Insights, 24/7 Assist, and Family Line in the ɧƵ Family app.

GPS and network location

To allow GPS and network location sharing, Guardians and Members must download the ɧƵ Family app and provide consent. If the app is uninstalled, GPS will no longer be shared, but you must reinstall the app to change your network location sharing settings. Network location is not available for any wireless lines not on the same ɧƵ account as the Guardian who subscribed to ɧƵ Family.

For Dependents. When Guardians add a Dependent, the Guardian must provide consent for ɧƵ Family to collect, use, and disclose personal information from Dependents’ devices. Guardians can revoke consent for ɧƵ Family to collect personal information at any time by deleting the Dependent’s profile in the ɧƵ Family app. ɧƵ will continue to collect information to provide wireless service to the line. Deletion of the Companion app from compatible devices will stop some information collection from that device, such as GPS location or web and app activity monitoring, but other information collection and disclosure will continue, including for network location and call and messaging activity.

When the ɧƵ Family Companion app is installed on Dependents’ compatible devices, ɧƵ Family asks for consent to collect certain information, including precise location, motion activity data, device contacts, and web and app activity monitoring. These permissions can be changed in the Dependent’s device settings. If a Dependent changes location sharing permissions in their device settings or if the ɧƵ Family Companion app is uninstalled, ɧƵ Family will continue to collect and share estimated network location unless the Guardian removes the ɧƵ Family Dependent profile in the ɧƵ Family account. Depending on their ɧƵ Family plan and device type, Dependents may be asked to consent to the use of that help prevent the deletion of the Companion app or the VPN, which is used for certain parental controls, like web and app activity monitoring or content filtering.

Tamper controls

Dependents with an iOS smartphone or tablet are asked to install a mobile device management (MDM) profile, which includes the installation of a VPN. The MDM profile helps prevent the removal of the VPN and the Companion app. To uninstall the Companion app or the VPN, the MDM profile must be deleted from the Dependent’s device. Dependents with an Android smartphone or tablet are asked to install a VPN and enable Accessibility settings for the ɧƵ Family Companion app. Once Accessibility settings are enabled, a PIN is required to uninstall the VPN or Companion app. The PIN can be found in the Guardian’s ɧƵ Family app settings. If the ɧƵ Family VPN is uninstalled, ɧƵ Family web browsing and app activity monitoring services are disabled, but screen time information may still be collected if the Dependent device uses an Android operating system and the Android device settings permit it.

For Gizmo watches, ɧƵ Family gives you additional choices depending on the type of Gizmo wearable that your Dependent uses and the features you choose to activate. For example, you can turn on auto-answer, a feature that allows your call to be automatically answered by the Gizmo watch after ten seconds and that lasts up to 60 seconds. Auto-Answer is not available in school mode, but is available in all other modes when your child is alerted to an incoming call by a ring, a vibration, and/or an indication on the watch screen. For Gizmo watches with video calling, this feature can be turned off under your child’s ɧƵ Family profile. Guardians can also choose whether to enable media backup, which will make photos and videos taken on the Gizmo watch available to Guardians in the ɧƵ Family app.If your child uses a Gizmo device compatible with Gizmo Ask & Learn, you can visit the Gizmo profile to turn this feature on and off and to request access to your child’s requests and the responses provided.

Depending on your Gizmo watch, you can assign between nine and nineteen trusted contacts, and give them permission to communicate with the Dependent by phone and by photo, video, audio and text messaging via the ɧƵ Family app. If authorized by you, certain trusted contacts can be given additional controls, such as the ability to turn on auto-answer for their calls to your child and to view your child’s location. Only Guardians can add, change or remove trusted contacts.

Guardians may review the personal information collected by ɧƵ Family from Dependent devices. For more information or assistance with these choices or if you have questions or concerns about our privacy practices, you can contact us at verizonfamily@verizon.com.
